Petition to Stop the Berkeley County Sales Tax Increase

To: The Berkeley County Commission and State Representatives

We, the undersigned, stand united in opposition to the proposed Berkeley County sales tax increase. At a time when families across our community are struggling to put food on the table due to rampant inflation, it is unconscionable and immoral to act like typical “tax and spend” Democrats and burden residents with additional taxes.

Key Points of Opposition:

  1. Mismanagement of Existing Funds: Berkeley County already operates with a $58 million budget. If public safety is truly the priority, taxpayer dollars must be redirected from unnecessary expenditures like pickleball courts, dog parks, and bike racks. Fiscal responsibility demands that existing funds be utilized more effectively before asking for more from the hardworking citizens of Berkeley County.

  2. Immoral Use of Taxpayer Money: The County Commission is reportedly spending over $200,000 of taxpayer dollars to hire a lobbyist in Charleston to push through this tax increase. This means they are using your money to lobby for policies that will take even more of your money. This blatant misuse of public funds is unacceptable.

  3. Excessive Taxation: Families in Berkeley County are already overtaxed. The proposed sales tax increase would exacerbate the financial struggles of many households, making it even harder for them to provide for their basic needs. Government should focus on reducing waste and spending within its means rather than continuously turning to taxpayers for more.

Our Pledge:

By signing this petition, we not only oppose the Berkeley County sales tax increase but also pledge to vote against any County Commissioner, State Delegate, or Senator who supports raising the sales tax.

Enough is enough—no more taxes.

We demand that the County Commission:

  • Halt all efforts to increase the sales tax.

  • Reevaluate, audit and prioritize existing budget allocations to address public safety without increasing the financial burden on residents.

  • Cease the misuse of taxpayer funds for lobbying efforts that do not reflect the will of the people.

Together, we call for fiscal responsibility, transparency, and accountability from our elected officials. Let our voices be heard: NO to the sales tax increase!
